Aaron and Nichole Carpenter
Though they both grew up in Michigan, Aaron and Nichole didn't meet until they attended college in Florida. Aaron was preparing for pastoral ministry, and Nichole was working on a music degree in piano proficiency; but before it was all over, both had fallen in love. After graduating from college then seminary (MDiv), Aaron and Nichole moved to Alabama where he pastored a church for nearly 9 years.
After 9 years of ministry and three kids later, they begin to feel God's calling to plant a church in the Pacific Northwest. In August of 2015, God eventually led them specifically to Northeast Tacoma, a community they immediately fell in love with.
Aaron and Nichole are the parents of three children: William (14), Alayna (11), and Wesley (9). They love to use their passion for music and theater in the community and are active participants in the local schools.
Jim and Adrienne Barnes
Jim and Adrienne also met in college. Though Jim was from South Carolina, and Adrienne was from Ohio, they fell in love after meeting each other in a vocal instruction class. In 2002, Jim and Adrienne both graduated from college with degrees in Theology and Voice Performance respectively. After earning his MDiv from seminary, Jim and Adrienne packed up their two children and moved to Texas to attend seminary where Jim earned his Master of Arts in Theology.
Jim and Adrienne then moved to South Carolina where Jim had the privilege of pastoring the church he grew up in. After four years of pastoring, God began to lead them to join Aaron and Nichole on their journey of church planting in Northeast Tacoma.
Jim and Adrienne have four children: Carter (13), Campbell (11), Carson (8), and Cate (6). Jim and Adrienne both work full-time at Tacoma Baptist School. Adrienne uses her vocal abilities to lead all of the choirs at Tacoma Baptist School while Jim serves as the Campus Life Director.
Joe and Kayla Duke
Community Group Director
Joe and Kayla met while attending a university in Alabama. She was diligently pursuing a degree in Biology while Joe was earning degrees in both English and History. Nonetheless, they found time to fall in love, and after graduating, they came to believe that God was leading them move to the Seattle area to work and help a church.
And that's exactly what they did. In 2016, Joe and Kayla moved to Tacoma and became an important part of starting Soundside Church.
In September of 2017, Joe and Kayla welcomed Eloise Penn into the world who immediately became the love of their life. Besides overseeing a Home Care organization, Joe serves as the Community Groups director of Soundside and plays guitar on the worship team. Kayla teaches Biology at Tacoma Baptist School and is a wonderful mother to Eloise.
Jason and Lawanda McGrath
Jason and Lawanda both grew up in the Atlanta, Georgia area and first met in high school. However, they didn't begin to date until they both attended college in Florida. Jason earned his bachelors in theology and music while Lawanda graduated with a degree in nursing. After earning his MA and MDiv degree in seminary, Jason and Lawanda moved to Palm Bay, Florida, where Jason served as an associate pastor for 12 years.
Eventually, Jason and Lawanda begin to feel that God was leading them to a new spiritual mission. After much prayer, the McGraths believed God was pointing to the Pacific Northwest where Soundside was being started. In the summer of 2017, the McGraths took the 3,000 mile journey and moved to Northeast Tacoma.
Jason and Lawanda are the parents of four children: Ian (13), Kate (12), Rylee (9), and Darcy (6). Lawanda works as a nurse in the Tacoma area while Jason serves at Soundside as the worship leader and director of media outreach.
John grew up in central California before choosing to attend a Christian university in Florida. While earning his degree in Pastoral Ministries, John signed up for a summer internship with Sounside Church. After spending the summer ministering in the Northeast Tacoma community, John returned to college, graduated, and felt God leading him back to Soundside to serve.
John currently works full-time at Starbucks and serves as the Student Ministries Director for Soundside. He is also working on his Masters degree from Gateway Seminary.
